Have you ever had a professional massage? If you have, you know what a great experience it is. But with spas closed, most of us have been having to forgo any monthly treatments. The good news is however is that you can have your very own massage therapist with you at all times – via your hands!
One way to provide short-term relief from the gnawing pain and strain? Give your self a little self-massage. Below we outline our top self-massage tips and tricks, taking notes from old Chinese medicine and modern physiotherapy – dig in.
Breast Massage
Breast massage is not only meant to be a practice of self-love, but if done correctly it can help with stress relief, improve circulation, and release pain and breast tenderness.
It’s just as simple to practice a breast massage on yourself at home than it is to go to an Ayurvedic spa – here are some of the key acupuncture points to press.
In the altar: the middle of the two nipples
Nipple root: two fingers under the nipple
Eagle window: 1/4 of the line between the middle of the collarbone and the nipple
Tianxi: Three fingers outside the nipple
- Combine the index finger and middle finger, and press gently with the pad of the finger; you can press with a single point or use a circle, press each acupoint for 5-10 seconds, and do 3-5 cycles.
2. Remember not to press too hard, otherwise, it will rupture the capillaries and cause bruising; as long as you feel soreness, swelling, and slight soreness.
3. Since there are not many muscles on the chest and back, the ribs may be directly oppressed, so remember not to use knuckles or massage equipment to rub hard.
Back Massage
Sitting at your desk all day can cause aches and pains in our backs – but there are ways to combat the unsightly slouch.
Get yourself a foam roller and loosen up those back muscles with this simple self-massage:
Wind pool: three fingers behind the ear
Ointment blindness: the four fingers below the midpoint of the shoulder line, and then the four fingers on the sides
- Press each acupoint for 5-10 seconds and do 3-5 cycles.
2. At Fengchi Point, buckle your hands and ten fingers on the back of your neck, and gently press with the thumb of your thumb.
3. It is more difficult to massage the Gaoxue acupoint on the back. You can use a flexible “tennis ball” to put it on the back and press it with light body weight. Be careful not to apply too much force to the ribs.
